Objectives of the Course:
The course provides a comprehensive perspective of the main Human Resources and Office Management theories in order to provide a conceptual and practical basis for student learning. It develops that learning by examining the main techniques involved in managing Human Resources. It also encourages students to draw on knowledge from their own experience to develop a clear understanding and practical working knowledge of HRM.
On successful completion of the course students will be able to understand the benefits of effective Human Resource strategies. They will have a theoretical framework for the development and evaluation of HRM concepts and principles and a thorough familiarity with the operational details of Human Resource and Office Management.

Course Outline:
The topics covered in this programme represent a broad coverage of the major areas in HRM and are designed to encourage students to draw on learning from their own experiences and theoretical views. Although the course is academic in nature and draws on theoretical study, it is essentially a process based and practical, hands-on course, which relies greatly on student participation.
1. Total Quality: The Role of Human Resources;
2. Human Resource Information: A Strategic Tool;
3. Public Sector Human Resource Management: An Agenda;
4. Organisation and Human Resource Management: The European Perspective;
5. Human Resource Management in Action: A joint approach.

Learning Outcomes for each module/award:
Knowledge:
The learner will understand theoretical and practical knowledge, information and tasks related to Human Resource and Office Management. The learner will also acquire the ability to apply such knowledge and understanding towards the solution of everyday and complex situations with creativity, which may lead to further academic or vocational learning. On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand and apply the concept of total quality and the contribution of human resource function;
  • Identify strategic human resource information;
  • Implement strategies for human resource;
  • Identify and manage transition and change;
  • Analayse the European perspective on human resource and industrial relations;
  • Understand the role of top management and the role of the human resource function.

Skills - Applying Knowledge and Understanding
Communication Skills:

  • Communicate HR issues effectively;
  • Defining principles of communication on HR issues;
  • Communicating policies;
  • Monitoring and Ensuring compliance to HR policies.

Judgmental Skills:

  • Use appropriate tools and checklist for human resource management;
  • Deal with intercultural and gender issues;
  • Focus on management best practices, tools and models to implement an effective HRM system.

Learning Skills:

  • Understand and apply the concept of total quality and the contribution of human resource function;
  • Identify strategic human resource information;
  • Implement strategies for human resource;
  • Identify and manage transition and change;
  • Analayse the European perspective on human resource and industrial relations;
  • Understand the role of top management and the role of the human resource function.

Competencies:
By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the significance, evolution and concept of total quality management in the human resource function;
  • Identify strategic human resource information;
  • Appreciate the relationship between business strategy formulation, human resource strategy formulation and its implementation;
  • Understand the implications of government policies on human resources including: privitisation, delegation, competition, enterprise, deregulation, service quality and curtailment of trade union powers;
  • Manage change.
